The marshmallow test was conducted in the mid 20th century by the then Stanford University professor Walter Mischel. Mind you, this is one of the most famous psychology experiments ever conducted! The experiment consisted of a group of pre-school children between 3 to 5 years of age. Each of the children was sat down with a marshmallow.

Each subject was placed in a room consisting of a table with a single chair for them to sit at. No toys, no windows, no distractions. Once the subjects were comfortable, an adult would come in the room with a a plate containing a single marshmallow on it. The marshmallow test is a well-known piece of social science researcher used to determine a child's ability to delay gratification, which is said to indicate success later in life.

In this study, a child was offered a choice between one small but immediate reward, or two small rewards if they waited for a period of time. In the marshmallow test, young children are given one marshmallow and told they can eat it right away or, if they wait a while, while nobody is watching, they can have two marshmallows instead. The half-century-old test is quite well-known. The experiment consisted of 16 girls and 16 boys, ages ranging from 3 to 5 years old. Each subject was placed in a room consisting of a table with a single chair for them to sit at. No toys, no windows, no distractions.
