Stage IV colon cancers have spread from the colon to distant organs and tissues. Colon cancer most often spreads to the liver, but it can also spread to other places like the lungs, brain, peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), or to distant lymph nodes. In most cases surgery is unlikely to cure these cancers.

If you are diagnosed with bowel cancer, you will firstly need to have tests to determine the size of the cancer tumour, its position and whether it has spread. This process is known as 'staging'. Colon cancer can be staged by several methods. The two most common methods are the TNM classification and Dukes staging. Dukes classification divides colon and rectal cancer into three stages, A, B and C. Colon cancers originate from the inner lining of the colon, called the mucosa.
