Her current show at the Friedrich Petzel gallery offers a clear view of her sometimes hermetic approach without giving the game away. I first came across Charline von Heyl’s paintings in the mid-’90s. She had moved to New York from Germany in 1994, having had her first New York solo show at Friedrich Petzel Gallery. Charline von Heyl - Artists Friedrich Petzel Gallery, founded in 1994, first opened on Wooster Street in the Soho area of New York City. In 2000, the gallery moved to 537 West 22nd Street in Chelsea and in 2006 expanded to include a separate space next door dedicated to smaller exhibitions, artists' projects, and performances. This exhibition marks the first museum survey of Charline von Heyl, a painter whose vibrant, insistent, enigmatic work demonstrates that painting is still intensely relevant in contemporary art. Her paintings are not abstractions of objects or figures; instead, she is interested in creating a “new image that stands for itself as a fact.” Charline von Heyl. Happy End. 2005.
